He quit his teaching job after one semester in the 1970’s to pursue a career in homebuilding with Ryan Homes – one of the largest home builders in the country at that time. He left Ryan Homes and started his own homebuilding business in 1980 called NVHomes, where he expanded aggressively in the Washington, DC area. In an ironic twist of fate, NVHomes acquired Ryan Homes in 1986. This was especially remarkable considering the latter had generated 5x more revenue than NVHomes the previous year.
